Why We Watch March Madness

One of the few sports tournaments or playoffs I watch is the NCAA Collegiate Basketball play-offs that we call March Madness. The existential reality of “one and done”. The always appealing underdog team that beats a top seed. And, of course the “buzzer beaters”, that last-second shot that provides the margin of victory.

I also like watching the intense fervor of college fans, full of proud and nervous parents rooting for their sons and daughters. The remembrance of being a proud parent watching a child compete. Earlier than that, remembering the partying that went on when one’s college won a game in the tournament. Kids are going to have fun tonight! The “they will never forget this game as long as they live” moments.

Its Americana. Young people play for the love of the game and with the desire to win. No multi-million dollar contracts and attitudes of professional athletes.
