In 2020, my grown son – 30-something at the time - asked me if there had ever been a year or period of time when things had been so divided, uncertain, polarized, and angry. I thought a minute and then said, “1968”. 2020 was the year of the murder of George Floyd, Covid-19 epidemic, justice demonstrations around the world, and ongoing wars. The year 1968 has been spoken in the years since as a fragile moment in time.
In the late 1960s and into the first half of the 1970s, if you were a “conservative” or a “hawk,” the bumper sticker of the day was “America: Love it or Leave it”. The since-developed ideas of liberal and conservative came later. Back in 1968, the dualities were clear:
Love it or leave it
Hawk vs. Dove
Pro-War / Anti-War
What I find interesting is how much things have changed.
“Love it or Leave it” was what right-wing voters put on their trucks and cars. When this long-haired hippy saw that bumper sticker, I knew that the people in the car would not like me or would find my appearance not to their liking.
The Presidential Election of 2024, has turned this 1968 reality upside down.
The “conservative candidate,” Donald Trump, has been trashing America. He most recently called America a “garbage can of a country”. I don’t think that any presidential candidate in theU.S. history has ever spoken so negatively about this wonderful democracy.
What?! If you Mr. Trump do not love America, or want America to once agan become a “shining city on a hill”.
If Donald Trump doesn’t like America, he can leave it! Love it or leave it, Donald
Every Era has interesting moments in time. This Presidential Election has a most dramatic contrast in candidates. These few days before the election are very suspenseful......
