It is GenX Time!
The Boomers are largely leaving the stage.
Finally!
The biggest generation in the U.S. history – and globally as well- is, out of aging necessity, leaving the stage. And GenX is thrilled as the Boomers have, historically, greatly overshadowed GenX this century.
The Greatest Generation ruled the first half of the 20th century. The Silent Generation ruled the middle third of the century and the Boomers ruled the last third and well into this century. The Millennials were heralded as perhaps a second “great generation” as a possibility for when they are seizing the levers of power in middle age. But now – for maybe five to ten years – it will be the heyday of GenX on the world stage.
This generation has probably as much attitude and swagger as any generation. They were the first ‘latch-key’ generation as they were the first generation growing up in a two-income family reality, where the TV and the video game console kept the child company after school. None of the play dates of the Millennials and Digital Natives, GenX kids had to keep themselves amused. After school they came home to play video games, use the home computer, and watch TV. This is the generation that watched MTV for hours, all the time.
Yes, there are a number of Boomers in areas of prominence in the world today:
Donald Trump
Vladimir Putin
All the old rock bands of the 1960s and 1970s who still keep doing farewell tours.
Here are just some of the GenXers that you might know:
Elon Musk
Emmanuel Macron
Vladamir Zelenskyy
Sergei Brin
Larry Page
Mark Zuckerberg
Rachel Maddow
Dr. Dre
Eminem
Dave Grohl
Julia Roberts
Jennifer Aniston
Reese Witherspoon
Nicole Kidman
Leonardo DiCaprio
Tom Brady
The current leaders of these countries:
-Croatia, the Netherlands, Spain, Dominican Republic, Switzerland, Kenya, Poland, Viet Nam, Serbia, Qatar, Bhutan and Hungary to name just a few.
Many of these people are in their late 40’s or early 50’s, so they will continue to dominate well into their 60s, at which time, if not before then, the Millennials will capture ascendancy of the generation whose time will have come by then.
What can we expect from Generation X? It is not clear, though there will be a lot of attitude, and choices that will challenge existing Boomer created concepts and structures. If anything, Gen X might be the most unstructured generation in the short history of the U.S. They will want something different, something that promotes independence, that challenges thinking that heretofore was considered decided.
A bit up for grabs.
But then this is the 2020’s, the most disruptive decade in history.
